I had the awesome opportunity, a couple of years ago, to hear Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman speak at a basketball camp our oldest daughter attended. Among the many jewels she shared, she drilled home the point, “Make the details matter!” She was talking about basketball but upon further reflection I recognized that short statement to apply also to the life we live.
In our daily routines we have a tendency to concentrate only on the thing(s) we desire. Often times we miss the blessing of the precious moments we find ourselves in while pushing towards our goal. Those moments are our life’s details. Those annoying sick days that prevented us from getting ahead on a project helped us to catch up on some needed rest and to lend an ear to a family member who was on the edge. That unbelievably slow driver keeping us from making an appointment on time protected us from a fatal car accident five minutes up the road. A job loss or demotion that disrupted our family income made room for an undiscovered gift that caused our saucer to overflow. That emergency room visit that nearly took our life became our witness to help save someone from a spiritual death. The details of our lives matter! Don’t be so quick to complain about them or to dismiss them. God uses it ALL for His specific and divine purpose…and it’s for our good. We must trust and believe that. Embrace it. His details matter. We must pay close attention! The Bible says in Psalms 139:13-18,
“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!”
We are God’s workmanship, His creation. He values our details because He made us. Shift your mindset. Your details matter! They’re marvelous details that are designed to bless you and others!
Thanks for reminding us.
