Nothing New Under the Sun: What is Your Legacy?

Me (Dr. Tammi Love), with my husband, Dr. Jawwad J. Love, in Nairobi, Kenya in February 2025. We both led individual workshops to Kenyan women and men, focusing on empowerment and social enterprise. The workshops emphasize the legacy of good we are actively doing across the globe via our nonprofit, Mbele Leadership Foundation.

As a young person growing up in the church, I often paused when reading about “begetting” in scripture, especially in the Old Testament. While the word “beget” is used to signify procreation or bearing children, it also carries another meaning: “to give rise to” or “to bring about.”

The steps of my life’s journey tell a story of both certainties and uncertainties, bringing about moments of clarity as well as wonder. I’ve seen things I wish I could unsee, and I’ve witnessed wonders I longed to see again. I’ve faced challenges and tragedies I would never want to revisit, yet I’ve also been transformed by experiences I’ll forever treasure.

Through it all, the past and the present, I’ve come to recognize the undeniable power of both good and evil. Each gives rise to itself: good begets good, and evil begets evil. No matter how great either may seem, the Bible reminds us in Ecclesiastes that there is nothing new under the sun. Nothing. The good we celebrate has been experienced before. The evil we abhor has wreaked havoc before. And even the so-called “gray areas” we sometimes cling to have only produced more confusion and danger.

These truths call us to be wiser in even the smallest of choices. Details matter. Every action carries consequences. And every action leaves behind the imprint of a legacy—one that will beget either more good, more evil, or, God forbid, more confusion.

If we are to cut off evil at the path, let’s start with one practice, individually: a daily self-check. Ask yourself—How am I choosing to express my intentions when interacting with others? How has pride misled me today? How did my actions today leave a legacy that brings about good?

Life does not have to overwhelm us. But it does need to transform us—into something better.

Be well, y’all, and much love!

All things are wearisome,
    more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,
nor the ear its fill of hearing.
What has been will be again,
    what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.

-Ecclesiastes 1:8-9

I Give Him Praise!

I was on FaceTime with my oldest daughter last week, and as soon as she appeared on the screen, I was captivated—not just by her beauty, but by the space around her and how she seemed to fill it. She laughed at something we were discussing, and in true me-fashion, I couldn’t resist snapping a photo mid-laughter.

Looking back at that photo today, I was reminded of the joy of God’s might. His might towers over us, yet it does not crush us. It shelters us, protects us, and lifts us into joy. God’s might is our victory. God’s might is our renewal. God’s might is even the source of our laughter.

My encouragement to you today is to give yourself permission to find joy in God—not in things, not in people, but in Him alone. For He is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. The Lord our God is always with us, and for this I give Him praise!

Be well, y’all and much love!

The Lord your God
wins victory after victory
    and is always with you.
He celebrates and sings
    because of you,
and he will refresh your life
    with his love.”

I Saw God

I recently came face to face with a buck. Well, almost face to face. I was traveling home from work on a rural road soon after sunset. I approached an intersection, and suddenly, in my peripheral, I saw a large object dart to the edge of the road. I instantly reacted. My body tensed up and my eyes darted to the road’s edge and my rearview mirror. I gripped the steering wheel and my foot slammed on the brake. My heart beat like it was pounding out of my chest. I screamed; inwardly and outwardly.

After coming to a complete stop, I turned my head to face the object and recognized it as a large buck. My eyes seemed to bulge out of its sockets and fastened on the buck’s antlers, then later to its majestic stature. The buck stood still and calm, unbothered, as if nothing could disrupt who and what it was. My presence didn’t upset, bring fear, or alter its intention to cross the road. When the buck was ready, it chose to cross the road behind my truck. And in seconds, it was out of my view.

I sat at that intersection shaking. Thoughts of what could have happened raced across my mind. I gathered myself, cautiously looked in all directions, and slowly continued my journey home. My mind continued to race. I then remembered to breathe.

My inhale and exhale settled me. I heard God whisper, Tammi, breathe again. So, I did. God repeated his instruction, and I obeyed His whisper each time. He then began to pour wisdom into my spirit like an overflow of refreshing water. He allowed me to recall what I just experienced – this time with revelation, accompanied by a force of unmovable strength. The impact was undeniable. God consoled me and His creation was reborn.

I saw God that day. God showed me His majesty, protection, power, and provision – yet again. He has sustained me and has allowed me to walk in stillness, no matter the terrain, for such a time as this. God’s got me. I’m mighty grateful!

God is intentional in ways that get our attention. When He reveals Himself, we are wise not to dismiss Him. Instead, we should lean in closer in hopes of receiving a fresh perspective. No one is exempt from the refilling God offers. We all need to see God for who and what He is.

Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? – Exodus 15:11

The Unexpected

The beauty of our journey is often found in unexpected moments. The stranger who pays for our meal, the “good” report after rounds of hopeless health updates, the sudden promotion, a serenade on our birthday from coworkers we thought didn’t like us, the discovery of $5 in a jeans pocket. If we sit still and ponder the moments we didn’t see coming, we’ll realize the hand and whisper of God reworking our delicate journeys to reflect His goodness and glory.

Ms. Mary was someone I didn’t see coming. She approached me after a worship service where I preached one of the seven last words of Christ. During my sermon, I shared prophet Jeremiah’s message of the Potter and the Potter’s House, as an encouragement to the weary and broken. After the service, in a brief introduction, Ms. Mary identified herself as a potter. Among other things she shared with me, she said my message was for her. Ms. Mary shared details about her pottery ministry and alerted me of her visit to my area in a couple of weeks. She said she would bring me a special gift.

Days passed, and so did my recollection of her anticipated visit. Until, of course, one Sunday morning, I drove into our church parking lot and saw an unfamiliar car. I was rushing to get inside for Sunday School, and Ms. Mary got out of her car to warmly greet me. She then presented me with a gift bag. She said, “I told you I was coming.” I instantly remembered our conversation after that worship service. I put aside the things I had in my hands and carefully opened the gift bag. As I removed the surrounding paper, the gift was revealed. The gift was a custom-made pot with beautiful curves and designs adorned with a matching lid fashioning a slight bend. As tears began to flow down my face, Ms. Mary said this was the pot God led her to for me. Ms. Mary’s ministry of pots is dependent on the direction of God. She sculpts them, and God instructs her on who to bless. She embraced me as I wept. I was overwhelmed by her kindness, by God’s mindfulness of me, and by a wound within that was being healed precisely at that moment.

God has a distinct way of getting our attention. While we seek to plan our future, we cannot escape the unexpected moments of life that command our attention and response. Does the impact of unforeseen moments darken your perspective on the journey you hope to travel, or does the unexpected encourage your adventurous path? Are you prone to see damaged outcomes, or are you determined to trust in the promise and work of the Potter? I pray you see the latter. God is inviting us to His house to peek at what He’s working on. What do you see?

“So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.” – Jeremiah 18:3-4
